So you want to take a vacation and you say you're on a budget? Hey, I know the feeling. If there's one thing I agree on is that everyone deserves a vacation. We live busy lives, don't we? For some of us, our days never end. We work a full-time job and we come home and work some more. Maybe because we're catching up on work or because we're taking care of our family. Yes, taking care of your family is work. Some of those stay-at-home moms or dads put in a harder day then those who work for an employer.
We all deserve a vacation. Now if you are loaded with money then this blog may not be for you. But at the same time, it may be worth the read. After all, even wealthy people appreciate counting the cost. That's how most millionaires got to be where they are today. So let's take a look at Top 8 options.
How much do you have to spend? What do you enjoy doing? At a higher end I might recommend flying somewhere interesting and backpacking. Most backpackers stay at bed and breakfasts or hostels. Don't worry, not all of them are dumps. There are some really nice and clean bed and breakfast and hostels out there. I like hostels.com, hostelworld.com, Airbnb.com.
Thanks to technology while you are there you can look up nice restaurants that are in your budget and in your area. Sightseeing is a really good way to save money as well. Stay in an area where there are a lot of nice places with great views to visit. You can find great deals using Google and Yahoo. Always remember to plan your days so you know exactly how much money you will need and how much you will have remaining.
2) Travel Apps
Take advantage of all of the different travel apps out there to help you find the best ticket fare. I like Onthefly, Kayak, Priceline, Skyscanner. And I always like to use the rule of three. Always compare at least three different places against each other and make your best choice. I used to work for the travel industry and it used to be very easy to predict when tickets are going to be cheap and when they're going to be more expensive. Nowadays it's all about finding the right deal at the right time. But generally speaking during school vacation is when ticket prices go way up. Remember too, finding a nice warm place during the winter time will save you plenty as well. Remember the Caribbean is still hot when it's winter where you are.
Perhaps some of you prefer just to stay on a beach. Well that makes it even easier. Just search for all-inclusive hotels or a Bed and Breakfast. In Mexico there are so many places competing against each other, you're almost guaranteed to find a good deal. And always choose the cheapest room. Why do I say that? Because while you're in Mexico you can negotiate for a better room. While you're there, ask them how much it would cost for you to upgrade while holding a $20. You may be surprised.
But let's say you can't afford to fly anywhere. Well, if you have a car you can take a nice road trip. Check out TripAdvisor and look up different places to see and eat. I like Yelp too. You can plan a trip with different stops that have exactly what you are looking for. Many of us have spent years living in the same area and haven't even seen half of it. By checking out different travel apps you can see what some of the most popular places to visit in your area are. Or in the area you are visiting.
Something my hubby and I like to do is go on cruises. You can often find nice package deals that include the airplane, hotel, and ship. Our go to travel person is Chuck from Navigotravel. He can set up everything for you. Don't worry, it won't cost you extra. He gets paid directly from the cruise liner. I've tried to beat his prices. It's not possible but you can try if you like. Lol. More often than none, going on a cruise will be much cheaper than an all-inclusive. Plus you get to visit more places. If you get seasick then I would recommend a bigger boat. You almost don't feel any movement. Currently our favorite cruise liner is Royal Caribbean.
If you prefer to do your own research instead of using a travel agent, I highly recommend Cheapflights.com. They have great prices on cruises.
Some of my friends really enjoy doing a staycation. This would be a great opportunity for you to catch up on your writing, reading, cleaning, hanging out with friends and family that maybe you don't always have time to be with. Sometimes we go on vacation because we just want to make our family happy when all our family really wants is just to be together.
Something my husband and I did was get a hotel for a few nights, a few hours away from where we live. We got to check out a different area and we spent less than two hundred bucks. It was really nice and well deserved. Remember a vacation doesn't have to be 2 weeks long. A vacation just means getting away for a little while so that way you can get your mind and body back to a good state. And you'll be thankful you did.
How about camping? Camping is really big in my area. You can either rent an RV, van, bring some tents and enjoy a nice and peaceful time in the woods or next to a river. You can bring some food from home and cook it over a fire and enjoy Mother Nature at her finest. Camping is probably one of the best budget travel ideas out there. For some of you who are afraid of camping, don't worry. It's not like you're becoming a mountain man or woman. Many people are concerned about mosquitoes, bears or mountain lions. You can talk to a guide at the campsite and ask them what some of the known nuisances or dangers there are. Some campsites literally have very few animals in the area. Many are scared off by all the human activity. Campsites are often filled with many people . You're not necessarily alone but you still have enough peace and quiet to yourself. There are some really nice camping ideas online. Just search camping in your search engine. Sometimes you can find a really good deal on a camping Lodge that comes fully equipped with a full bathroom and kitchen. If you like fishing you can take the boat out and catch some fish and cook it at your campsite.
Many people think that a vacation is a time to blow all your money. Hey, I don't have a problem with going to Las Vegas and having a good time. But there's nothing wrong with counting the cost as well and being wise about your spending. Remember, everything you do adds up. And getting into the habit of just spending a lot of money can oftentimes be unfulfilling and unsatisfying. The real satisfaction comes from spending time with true friends and people that you love.
