I will admit - I am a little obsessed with Target.
It’s hard not to be. The store has pretty much everything you need, right in one place. But don’t be fooled by the prices on the shelf.
If you know the secrets to Target shopping, you can save a TON on every shopping trip! You don’t have to spend all day clipping Target coupons, either. I wish I've known about these tips years ago.. I would've saved myself so much money.
Here are my favorite ways to save money at Target. Happy saving!
1.Take a Picture of Your Receipt
Yeah, did you know you can get paid cash back just for taking a picture of your receipt? Well, basically.
Here’s how it works:
2. Save Your Emails From Target
Can’t hold off on that purchase for a big sale? Do the next best thing: Buy it now and get a refund next time the price drops.
Your secret weapon here is called Paribus — a tool that gets you money back for your online purchases. It’s free to sign up, and once you do, it will scan your email archives for any receipts. If it discovers you’ve purchased something from one of its monitored retailers, it will track the item’s price and help you get a refund anytime there’s a price drop.
Plus, if your guaranteed shipment shows up late, Paribus will help you get money back for what you paid for shipping.
3. “Drop” Points Toward Gift Cards
There’s a new rewards platform on the market.
Drop is a financial tech company that rewards for your purchases.
As an exclusive Drop user, all you have to do is link your credit and debit cards. When you make a Drop-qualified purchase, you’ll automatically earn points.
When you shop at Target and use your linked card, you’ll earn eight points per dollar spent. The points will add up, and you can then exchange them for gift cards to popular retailers like Amazon and Starbucks. For example, 5,000 points will get you a $5 Starbucks gift card. (You know how tempting that Starbucks inside Target is…)
It’s the ultimate loyalty card — without the card.
4. Grab a Free Target Gift Card
The Swagbucks mobile app is one of the best, legitimate paid survey apps out there.
The questions are pretty simple: Which do you like more: Coke or Cherry Coke? How many times have you been to the movies in the past 12 months?
You get the idea.
The average payout for answering a series of questions is 75 SBs, which is equivalent to 75 cents. You won’t qualify for every panel, but you can usually earn about $5 for 30 minutes of work, to be cashed out for gift cards to select retailers — including Target. For other ways to use Swagbucks, check out our review.
5. Know Your Target Markdown Tags
Target has a lot of stuff with the fun little red stickers on it. There are 2 ways to read these, first read the price. If you need the item right then and there, this won’t work for you. But if you can wait, you will likely get additional savings. Follow this rule of thumb on clearance items:
If the price ends:
Real savings amount: See the number on the top right hand corner? In my picture, it’s “50.” In order to calculate your savings, you can look at this number. That “50,” represents 50% off the items original price.
6) Mystery shopping
Did you know that Target is one of the dozens of national retailers to hire mystery shoppers? I admit mystery shopping takes a bit of time, but if you want to score steep discounts or gift cards, it's a great avenue to try out.
Target uses mystery shoppers to evaluate its quality from the customer's perspective. After all, employees would act differently if they knew a higher-up was coming to inspect the store. The goal of mystery shopping is to reveal areas where Target can improve, whether in employee training, stocking, or customer service.
In exchange for a report about your Target experience, you could score a gift card or free swag. Not bad, eh?
7) Know the days to shop
If you’re like me and you have to go through every clearance rack trying to find bargains, then make sure your hitting the store on the days the items get moved to the clearance section. This will ensure your shopping when they have the best selection. Below is a markdown schedule, so you can think of what your shopping for depending on the day you decide to go:
8) Bring reusable bags
Obviously, it’s better for the environment to opt out of using the plastic bags offered at the store. Some may even argue that the convenience factor of using them are the biggest perk, but…… I am sure I am not the only one that could join a support group for “Plastic Bag Hoarders!” You know, that one cupboard under my kitchen sink, that probably has more bags then I will ever need in a life time. Yeah, I know you have one too! But, for some reason, we don’t throw them out because “we might need them” #NOT!
Instead by trying to bring reusable bags, I save money! Not because I buy less stuff (let’s be real, here!), because target rewards me for it! By bringing your own bags to the store they will take 5% off your total purchase! 5%! For bags…. I know… it’s coming full circle for you. Better for the environment, your saving money, and less clutter. Ding, Ding, Ding, we have a winner here!
Pro Tip: Just leave the reusable bags in your car so you don’t forget them and so they’re readily available for an impromptu shopping trip!
9) The Target Cartwheel app
This one is pretty much a no brainer. Download the Target Cartwheel application from the application store. Proceed to ‘Add’ pretty much any product you may want to buy. Scan your unique code when checking out and the discount(s) will be automatically deducted at the register.
10) Use Amazon in Target
Did you know Target will price match Amazon? If you find an item cheaper on Amazon, pull it up on the app, show the cashier and they will price match it for you, instantly! Easy Peasey!
11) Check the Isle End Caps
Target stores all of the discounted items on the shelves at the end of their isles. Make sure to check there for things you need before going down the isles.
As you can see there are so many ways to save money at Target! Let me know if you've used any of these tips and comment below if you have any additional Target Hacks you'd like to share. Happy saving everyone!
